For more detail, please visit: [www.dos.state.fl.us/el/elcontent/index.html]( HOW DO EARLY LEARNING STANDARDS INFLUENCE THE FIVE DOMAINS? =========================================================== The Five Domains are the critical domain skills necessary to prepare students for school and further academic development. All students, regardless of age, need to be prepared with the knowledge, skills and understanding to enter Kindergarten ready to learn. We know from longitudinal research that children who learn critical domain skills before the time they enter Kindergarten will perform better on state assessments than children who do not have these skills. As a result, we need to spend much time in the preschool years with these children, even with preschoolers. We know, too, that it is imperative that these skills are taught by early intervention professionals, including therapists. Through research, we know that children who have attended early intervention programs in the preschool years have better outcomes in school than children who did not receive early intervention services. We have recently completed a study of Early Learning Standards and their influence on the Five Domains. It has been our experience that with every grade level of early learning standards, the understanding of the Five Domains becomes clearer, and we were able to demonstrate a more direct relationship between the ELS and the Five Domains. We have, in fact, demonstrated that the more standards a child can access, the more knowledge he or she will have about the Five Domains, and the better prepared they will be to enter the kindergarten year and be ready to learn. In this study, we were able to demonstrate that the more standards a child attended, the more likely they were to have known the meaning of the Five Domains and to have met, in some way, the expectations outlined by the standards. Based on this work, we have created an infographic that illustrates the influence of the Five Domains and Early Learning Standards on the academic development of our students. This infographic shows that the more standards
